{"id":1151,"date":"2008-11-12T07:46:03","date_gmt":"2008-11-12T15:46:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bbrace.laughingsquid.net\/wordpress\/?p=1149"},"modified":"2008-11-12T07:46:03","modified_gmt":"2008-11-12T15:46:03","slug":"special-times-edition-blankets-us-cities-proclaims-end-to-war","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bbrace.net\/wordpress\/?p=1151","title":{"rendered":"SPECIAL TIMES EDITION BLANKETS U.S. CITIES, PROCLAIMS END TO WAR"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>  * PDF: http:\/\/www.nytimes-se.com\/pdf<br \/>\n  * For video updates: http:\/\/www.nytimes-se.com\/video<br \/>\n  * Contact: mailto:writers@nytimes-se.com<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Early this morning, commuters nationwide were delighted to find out<br \/>\nthat while they were sleeping, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan had<br \/>\ncome to an end.<\/p>\n<p>If, that is, they happened to read a &#8220;special edition&#8221; of today&#8217;s New<br \/>\nYork Times.<\/p>\n<p>In an elaborate operation six months in the planning, 1.2 million<br \/>\npapers were printed at six different presses and driven to prearranged<br \/>\npickup locations, where thousands of volunteers stood ready to pass<br \/>\nthem out on the street.<\/p>\n<p>Articles in the paper announce dozens of new initiatives including the<br \/>\nestablishment of national health care, the abolition of corporate<br \/>\nlobbying, a maximum wage for C.E.O.s, and, of course, the end of the<br \/>\nwar.<\/p>\n<p>The paper, an exact replica of The New York Times, includes<br \/>\nInternational, National, New York, and Business sections, as well as<br \/>\neditorials, corrections, and a number of advertisements, including a<br \/>\nrecall notice for all cars that run on gasoline. There is also a<br \/>\ntimeline describing the gains brought about by eight months of<br \/>\nprogressive support and pressure, culminating in President Obama&#8217;s &#8220;Yes<br \/>\nwe REALLY can&#8221; speech. (The paper is post-dated July 4, 2009.)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s all about how at this point, we need to push harder than ever,&#8221;<br \/>\nsaid Bertha Suttner, one of the newspaper&#8217;s writers. &#8220;We&#8217;ve got to make<br \/>\nsure Obama and all the other Democrats do what we elected them to do.<br \/>\nAfter eight, or maybe twenty-eight years of hell, we need to start<br \/>\nimagining heaven.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Not all readers reacted favorably. &#8220;The thing I disagree with is how<br \/>\nthey did it,&#8221; said Stuart Carlyle, who received a paper in Grand<br \/>\nCentral Station while commuting to his Wall Street brokerage. &#8220;I&#8217;m all<br \/>\nfor freedom of speech, but they should have started their own paper.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>                             # 30 #<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>* PDF: http:\/\/www.nytimes-se.com\/pdf * For video updates: http:\/\/www.nytimes-se.com\/video * Contact: mailto:writers@nytimes-se.com Early this morning, commuters nationwide were delighted to find out that while they were sleeping, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan had come to an end.
